GAMM Juniors are young researchers and members of the GAMM who have been nominated for the first time out of a number of suggestions of possible candidates for the period 2012-2014.

At the GAMM Annual General Assembly 2011 in Graz, the nomination of young research candidates has been decided. The young research candidates are characterized by an excellent diploma/master and/or PhD thesis in the fields of Applied Mathematics or Mechanics. The first 10 GAMM Juniors have been nominated at the end of 2011 based on the proposals of the GAMM representatives at the different universities.

In each year, 10 new GAMM Juniors are selected out of suggested candidates so that after a starting period of 3 years the group will consist of 30 persons. During the time as GAMM Junior, the GAMM membership fee is waived. After 3 years, the membership as GAMM Junior is terminated automatically. By this means, it is guaranteed that young researchers obtain an additional financial and ideal support in their academic research starting time, that they transfer their knowledge to the next generations of GAMM Juniors and that they pass the organisation of the group to them.

The group is organised by its members who meet every year at several common workshops. A speaker of the GAMM Juniors is elected together with one or more deputies. The speaker participates in the GAMM Future Commission.

The local GAMM representative send a maximum of two nominations for the Juniors to the GAMM office (gamm@mailbox.tu-dresden.de) by June 15, every year.

The Commission, which decides on the selection of the Young Researcher Minisymposia, selects the Juniors.

Please submit a resume for each nomination and an assessment of a maximum of 2 pages each.

As GAMM Juniors, candidates can be selected, who graduated with exceptional achievements in their final thesis and/or PhD thesis in the field of Applied Mathematics or Mechanics, and who are younger than 32 years at 15 June of the appropriate year and who’s PhD examination is not older than two years. Deviations from this time frame as a consequence of inactive periods due to sickness or maternity leaves will be taken into account.

GAMM Juniors are representatives of the young scientific generation in the fields of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics who represent these scientific fields within the academic research and the society.

With the constitution of the GAMM Juniors, three main objectives are pursued:

  • First, the GAMM Juniors contribute to the structural and ideational juvenescence of the GAMM by their voice.
  • Second, the young researchers’ self-organised scientific networking and autonomy are encouraged in the first years after the end of their academic education.
  • Third, the further enhancement of the interdisciplinarity between both scientific fields, which are equally represented, will lead to an intensification of the knowledge transfer between Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.

  • WORKSHOPS
    The GAMM juniors meet twice each year to organize and evaluate their numerous activities but also to exchange scientific ideas.In particular, the GAMM Juniors aim at facilitating collaborations and the exchange of ideas between engineers and mechanics on one and applied mathematicians on the other side.

    The spring workshop takes place during the annual GAMM meeting, usually on Friday afternoon.The autumn workshop is organized by a GAMM Junior at his/her home institution and lasts 2-3 days.

  • SUMMER SCHOOLS
    Since 2014, there has been yearly a Summerschool on Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (SAMM) organized by the GAMM Juniors.

  • CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GAMM ANNUAL MEETING
    At the annual GAMM meeting the Juniors organize a poster session (first 2011 in Graz) and the YAMM, a get-together where young academics can discuss important issues concerning their academic lifes and careers with more experienced researches (first 2017 in Weimar).

  • CONTRIBUTION TO THE GAMM MAGAZINE (“RUNDBRIEF”)
    One page in each issue of the GAMM magazine is devoted to the GAMM juniors’ reports.

  • GAMMAS ONLINE JOURNAL
    The online journal GAMMAS which is run by the GAMM Juniors is explicitly tailored for students and gives them the opportunity to publish their first scientific results. In addition to regular articles, the educational section is also open to non-student authors and aims also at teachers and undergraduate students. Submission, subscription and access is free and open.

  • Mailling List young-academics-in-gamm
    The GAMM Juniors have created a mailing list “young-academics-in-gamm”. This mailing list is especially addressed to young scientists and to all those who are interested in our activities.
    According to the target group, we would like to distribute information about events for young academics (such as workshops and summer schools), about our activities and about job offers.
